Oil Painting in Impasto Style with palette knives
I paint in a style known as impasto (thickly applied paint which produces a three-dimensional appearance) I enjoy painting with rich-vibrant colors, high contrast, and heavy textures. The highlights and shadows cast by the thickly applied paint gives my work the visual appeal of a sculpture. I apply my paint to the canvas with painting or palette knives verse the traditional brush. The palette knives allow me the freedom to mix the paints directly on the canvas while creating interesting peaks and valleys. These peaks and valleys pick up on the light and cast shadows on the painting that are difficult to produce with a traditional painting style.

Returning Home
The grace of the Louisiana live oak is simply awe inspiring. This particular Live Oak from City Park in New Orleans stands strong and proud on the park landscape. After years of growing and reaching for the sky it remains grounded and sure of where it belongs...HOME! Trees have always inspired me but I have to say these oaks speak volumes of history and I wish they could tell us all of what they have experienced. 'Childhood Backyard'
Commissioned impasto style painting using only palette knives. The days gone by of white washed tree bases and white walled tire swings and families spending time together in the backyard on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I absolutely loved creating this piece not only for Jo Ann but for my own family memories as well. It was incredible seeing her eyes view her little slice of your childhood in person for the first time. Taking in each little detail with wonder and joy. Knowing that I am able to create something that brings so much joy to another is so incredibly satisfying! 'Nola Hitching Post' found a new home
I'm so happy and honored to have my artwork in the McNamee home! This is one of the first paintings created as part of a series of tiny originals that will be available at upcoming art shows this year. I had a great time visiting with the family and I really hope it brightens not only their home but their faces as well each time they pass it.
Cottage Light

Nola Hitching Post
Part of a series of tiny originals I will be producing. This one is all about the historically significant and nostalgic the Nola hitching post can be found throughout the streets of New Orleans and the French Quarter. These post go back to the times of traveling by horse or horse and buggy, through the streets of the quarter. Long before there where parking meters or lines painted on the pavement for parking, this is where you would secure your horse while visiting an establishment. This post in particular captures my attention with its layers and layers of worn paint. Oh the stories this little post holds. 6"x6"x1.5" SOLD

'Twin Cypress'
The majestic bald cypress, the official state tree of Louisiana, known for it’s abilities to weather the storm. Storms from mother nature, loggers of the past as well as resisting decay from constant submergence in water. The uniqueness of the twin cypress is what has saved it from all of the above. Relying on each other to battle through it all, while displaying the ultimate balance of grace and strength. Returning Home before leaves
There's just something about trees and South Louisiana. I'm drawn to those sprawling limbs that so gracefully make there way outward and upward. But for me it's always been about the ones that decide to return from where they came. Those have always intrigued me. As I child walking through City Park I saw those limbs and thought, a giant playset to climb. I still see natures playset but stand back in awe at its beauty. This work is now completed and shown at the top of the blog. 24"x72"

St. Germain House
The St. Germain House is located at Ursulines Ave & Royal St in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The client requested this building after explaining their love for the city and it's architecture. Historical buildings are located throughout the city of New Orleans and this building is one such gem. St. Germain has a history in folk lore for being haunted by spirits of the past. Legend has it that after an encounter a doorway on the second floor was bricked over. Oh the many tails these buildings have to offer. Jean Lafittes Blacksmith Shop
Latest completed commission the 'Jean Lafittes Blacksmith Shop'. Now resides in it's new home in Texas. Jean Lafittes Blacksmith Shop is located on the corner of St. Phillips and Bourbon St. Built in the early 1700's it currently operates as the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States. Oh if these walls could talk... This moment in time could be a snap shot taken in the 1700's or today showings the timeless quality of NOLA. Nola Wheels Turning
I've thought about creating this painting for over a year and I've finally got it on canvas. I grew up on the Westbank of New Orleans looking across the river at all of the city's wonder. Everytime I cross the river I'm like a child again waiting to see what I'll discover. Everything about this city calls me in from the smell of the food through the streets to the historical architecture with rich colors and vibrant textures and patena. Nola Wheels Turning demonstrates the promise of what is to come when we continually move forward. This is a view of the St. Louis Cathedral through the Natchez paddle wheel on the Mississippi River. 24x36 Impasto style gallery wrapped canvas oil painting SOLD.

Standing Its Ground
I've always loved trees and water but there is just something empowering about cypress trees and their ability to grow regardless of the situation. I really admire their character, strength and beauty. Bourbon Street
If you saw me at an art show towards the end of 2011 you may remember this painting as the one I was working on at the front of my booth. The first time I placed a progression image up on the site I was asked if it was for sale. This painting marks the first time I sold an unfinished painting with just the pencil sketch and the sky painted in. I’m so happy to know it is going to a great home, thank you Donn. I was recently commissioned to work on a project that has truly inspired me. This portrait was created as a birthday gift from daughter to father. She wanted her father to always have a reminder of his parents near him. I have a similar drawing in my home of my great grandmother. I pass it everyday on the wall and it helps me to feel her presence is always near, never forgotten. I’m truly honored to have been chosen to create such a gift for this wonderful family. This paining has the most paint laid down on the canvas that I've done yet. I had fun laying on extremely thick paint and having the paint mix in a marbling way. I would be more than happy to sit with nothing else to do but stare at these peaks and valleys, watching how the colors interracted with each motion of the palette knife.

Pink Dahlia
Oil painting in impasto style. Gallery Wrapped Canvas 11”x 14”. SOLD. You may recognize this as the flower I was painting at Southdown in front of my booth. After the show I worked on adding more colors, detail, and depth. It was an interesting experience painting in front of people. Many questions on the technique used with the palette knife, inquiries of how my get my paint so thick, and even a finger run over the wet paint. Ha, it was too inviting not to touch. Thank you everyone you made that a great day.

Crawfish Boil with Foret family
This drawing was our family Christmas present to the Foret family. The instant I saw Ella tenderly place that little hand on Kaleb’s head, both completely amazed by that little crawfish, I knew it would be drawn Christmas. It was a wonderful afternoon spent with great friends and now this moment will always be remembered and cherished by all who see it. I love how one image can capture so much emotion and bring back so may memories that may other wise be lost over time. SOLD

Mr. and Mrs. Long Drawing
Recently I was commissioned by Marian Long to create a drawing for a her husband Gary. The photo chosen is an amazing image of Mr. Gary’s parents taken many years ago, displaying the undeniable young love they shared. This family heirloom needed some tlc to restore it to its’ glory. After restoring the original photo in Photoshop, I used the retouched image to produce the drawing. The Long family now has a restored digital image of the grandparents to share with the family and a new heirloom drawing to pass down through the years. SOLD

Many layers of paint overlay each other from the different elements in the painting. The background was painted and allowed to dry for several weeks before I could paint on top those layers with the next elements in the foreground. This painting took several months to complete because of it's size and drying times required between painting. SOLD

I was given several images of Josh: a baby photo of him wearing a football shirt, Josh watching from the sidelines intently, and several action shots from past games in which he shined. Hope Drawing
I’ve had some request to see more pencil drawings I’ve done in the past. My drawing are done on an 11x17 paper with the drawn image inside of 8x10. Drawings are produced from a photo reference and on average take upward of 8 hours to complete. The advantages of a pencil drawing are eliminating background information from the original photo that can distract from the final piece. Other corrections can also be made like blemishes, hair out of place, wrinkles, or even those rolls that we think we don’t have. If I’m drawing a multi-person portrait I can take images of the subjects from separate photos if needed.

This painting is based off of a painting I just knew my mom would love. I like to think of it as her view as if she stepped out of her home and that was what greeted her senses everyday. Oil on gallery wrap canvas, impasto. SOLD
My Moon over Miasma
James Michalopoulos inspired me to paint again. I visited his gallery with my husband as part of my Christmas present a couple of years ago. I was instantly drawn to the smell of the oils and the vibrance of the colors and texture in the paintings. I had liked his work before but it wasn't until i saw the originals that I understood and was hooked.
Second Coming
After completing this painting for a church in New Orleans I took about 8 years off from painting. This painting just took it all out of me. I've always been a pencil drawing artist but when your great grandma says honey can you...you say of course I can. Oil on canvas 4ft x 8ft with brushes. LOCATED NOW AT FIRST BAPTIST MARRERO, LA.

I created this for my mom for her birthday a couple years ago. I wanted a view I knew she would love, as if she walked out of her back door, walked to her favorite bench and got away from it all. Wood plank, 6"x14", woodburning, estimated 60 hours.

Thank you to all who came out to see me at the 2011 Destrehan Show. I have say that the grounds of this plantation are by far the prettiest place to spend two days. My tent was located in front of the plantation with a view of a very old oak tree dripping with windblown moss, a white picket fence, and the grass covered levee. Music was playing throughout the weekend in the distance with the smell of amazing food drifting past us in the breeze. Walking traffic was slow in the mornings allowing me to paint and draw both days. Then when the afternoons came so did the people ready to enjoy what we had to offer. Thank you all for a successful weekend.
